There are plenty of swinger-friendly city guides covering destinations packed with clubs, parties and dedicated venues.
Malta isn't one of them. And that's exactly why it's interesting.
This Mediterranean island has quietly become one of Europe's most talked-about destinations. Social media is full of videos showcasing honey-coloured cities, crystal-clear water, luxury villas and rooftop cocktails. Yet almost nobody is talking about how brilliantly Malta works for lifestyle travellers.
Not because of the clubs. Because of the freedom. This is a destination where you create your own spicy experience.
Why Malta works so well for swingers
Unlike Amsterdam, Paris or Barcelona, Malta doesn't revolve around established lifestyle venues.
Instead, the appeal comes from the combination of:
Luxury villas with private pools
Year-round sunshine
Easy flights from the UK
Adult-only hotels and resorts
Beautiful harbour cities
A growing community of locals and visitors
Day trips you'll genuinely enjoy
Festivals that attract an international crowd
The result is a destination that's perfect for couples, friendship groups and villa takeovers.
Valletta: the perfect base
Valletta instantly won me over. It's compact, endlessly walkable and filled with beautiful architecture, rooftop bars and harbour views. My base was Capital Inn, and one of my favourite memories was stepping outside each morning to a view of the cathedral dome.
The city itself feels completely different from the larger Mediterranean destinations. It's relaxed, sophisticated and small enough that you can explore it on foot.
Start your weekend at TRIBE
Every good trip needs a starting point. For me, that was TRIBE.
Great cocktails, excellent food and one of those playlists you'll end up trying to Shazam every few minutes. It's the ideal first-night venue before heading back to your hotel or villa.
Why villas are Malta's secret weapon
If you're planning a swinger trip to Malta, my biggest recommendation is simple:
Book the villa first.
Malta's villa scene is exceptional.
Large outdoor spaces, private pools, multiple bedrooms and incredible views make villas the natural social hub of any lifestyle-focused trip.
Unlike destinations where the nightlife venue becomes the main attraction, in Malta the villa often becomes the destination itself.
Don't skip Gozo
If I had to choose one activity from the entire trip, it would be the Gozo 4x4 Safari. What sounds like a simple sightseeing excursion turns into a full day of adventure.
You'll visit the Citadel, explore coastal viewpoints, discover hidden corners of the island and enjoy a fantastic lunch.
What makes it especially good for solo travellers and groups is how social the experience feels. You're travelling together, sharing discoveries and spending the day in conversation rather than wandering around alone.
St Julian's after dark
While Valletta provides the history and culture, St Julian's provides the energy. Just a short taxi ride away, it's the island's social centre and the best place to spend an evening.
One of my favourite discoveries was Two Buoys, a relaxed venue with a large outdoor terrace, great staff and surprisingly good value. It's the sort of place where one drink easily becomes three.
The Malta festival bonus
If your dates are flexible, consider planning your trip around one of Malta's major music festivals.
Defected Malta and Sidewinder Malta attract visitors from across Europe and create a much more social atmosphere across the island. Think Ibiza energy without Ibiza prices.
