Amsterdam city break in 3 days: weekend itinerary

Amsterdam is one of the easiest European city breaks to fall in love with.

Canals instead of roads. Bikes instead of traffic. Cocktail bars hidden behind unmarked doors. And enough late-night adventures to make every weekend feel different.

Amsterdam is one of our favourite European city breaks because there isn't just one way to experience it. You can arrive by ferry for a day of canals and culture, visit as part of a cruise itinerary, or stay for a long weekend and discover why the city really comes alive after dark. We've tried all three, and we're still not convinced there's a "best" option. It all depends on the kind of story you want to come home with. (Read: 3 Ways to Do Amsterdam)

Here's how we'd spend three playful days in Amsterdam.

Day 1: Canals, cocktails & getting lost in Amsterdam

Arrive, drop your bags and resist the urge to plan every minute.

Amsterdam works best when you leave room for surprises.

Morning

  • Wander the famous Nine Streets district

  • Coffee and people-watching by the canals

  • Browse boutique stores and hidden courtyards

Afternoon

  • Explore Jordaan, one of the city's most charming neighbourhoods

  • Take a canal cruise to get your bearings

  • Stop for drinks overlooking the water

Evening

  • Dinner in the city centre

  • Cocktails at one of Amsterdam's famous hidden speakeasies

  • Finish with a drink at the legendary Hill Street Blues

Playful Tip: The best Amsterdam photos happen after dark when the canal bridges light up.

Day 2

The Amsterdam city break after dark experience

Today is all about seeing why Amsterdam has one of Europe's most famous nightlife scenes.

Morning

  • Slow start

  • Brunch in De Pijp

  • Explore the Albert Cuyp Market

Afternoon

  • Visit Museumplein or simply spend the afternoon canal hopping

  • Rooftop drinks with city views

Evening

  • Dress-up night

  • Begin with dinner somewhere special

  • Experience Amsterdam's famous club scene

Whether your thing is underground techno, glamorous cocktails, big dancefloors or something a little more adventurous, Amsterdam has a venue for every type of traveller.

Playful Tip: Don't over-plan. The best nights usually start with "just one drink".

Day 3

Something Different

For your final day, head slightly beyond central Amsterdam.

Option 1

Zaandam

A short train ride from the city and home to the iconic Inntel Hotel, famous for looking like stacked Dutch houses.

Perfect for photos, wandering and a slower pace.

Option 2

Windmills & Dutch villages

Experience the postcard version of the Netherlands with traditional windmills, canals and historic streets.

Option 3

One last Amsterdam adventure

Rent bikes. Explore a new neighbourhood. Find your favourite canal.

And promise yourselves you'll come back.
